Instructions for Enabling SpamAssassin on your Email Account
cPanel Mail Manager
What is SpamAssassin?
SpamAssassin is a mail filter that identifies spam (unsolicited email).
Why use SpamAssassin?
Vendhost customers will find that enabling SpamAssassin will greatly reduce the amount of spam present within their inboxes.
Users should also be sure to check their "Spam" folders for any false positives.
How do I Enable SpamAssassin?
- Step 1
- Log in to cPanel (Example: http://www.yourdomain.com/cpanel)
- Step 2
- Go to Mail > SpamAssassin > click on Enable SpamAssassin
You will be taken to a page that displays "Attempting to enable SpamAssassin..." plus other details like version etc. as well as
"Spam Assassin has been enabled on this account" and "SpamAssassin is now: Enabled". If you do not get this message please
copy the message that you do get and email us at Support.
That is all that is required for a standard setup of SpamAssassin. If however, you wish to configure the settings a little please use
the "Configure SpamAssassin (require to rewrite subjects) button under the SpamAssassin main menu. The default settings are as follows:
- rewrite_header subject: ***SPAM***
- required_score: 5
You can also add unwanted emails to your blacklist and wanted emails marked as spam to your whitelist.
After you have enabled SpamAssassin you can check that it is working for you correctly. You should receive emails tagged as ***SPAM***
(or whatever you have made the rewrite_header subject). If you test this for a period of time (one month or so) and find that spam is being
correctly identified you may wish to set a rule or Email Filter to delete and not deliver these spam emails.
